Chapter Six

"There's no such thing as murder humor," Hermes mocked in falsetto as he paused in the alleyway down the block from The Aegean Inn. "The woman is intolerable," he told Daphne's unconscious form. Yet she had given up her immortality without blinking an eye, all to allow Hermes' plan to succeed.

Can't dwell on it now.

The coast seemed clear. He'd never admit it to anyone, but carrying others when he flew slowed him down drastically. Maybe milliseconds weren't a big deal for those who ran in real time, but it made him paranoid that a mortal would spot him, however briefly, covered in blood and holding an unconscious woman.

What am I thinking? No one will see me. I'm like the fucking wind!

Hermes snapped out of it and plowed through the front door, using his god powers to open and shut them as quickly as possible, and repeated the process through the staff door, the door to the satyr bedrooms on the ground floor, and into the room Melancton had taken over when Jacen had moved in with his human girlfriend.

Satyrs with human girlfriends. Ha. Well, mortals do like the freakiest things these days.

Melancton's room had blackout curtains drawn to keep the sunlight, and therefore Apollo, from reaching him, and they left everything darker than pitch. When he switched on the light, it illuminated a large bed, neatly made, with a thick, hand-carved headboard. Hermes doubted Melancton even slept on it. Since the satyr had favored sleeping in the forest, the bed may be too soft for him. Daphne, however, could do with a soft, warm surface to rest on for a change.

Gingerly, he placed the frail nymph on top of the duvet. Blood still covered her, dried and caked. A quick inventory of the room revealed a thick, blue blanket folded and placed in the corner where Jacen's belongings and furniture had been moved from, and more than enough room for Melancton to sleep without curling into a ball. Bingo.

He collected the blanket and picked off a long, straight, black hair. Good. Melancton's scent likely clung to it. If Daphne woke before he came back, hopefully her subconscious would register safety and she wouldn't freak out. Hermes spread the blanket over her and tucked it around her body gently. She sighed, swathed in warmth.

Even if Hybris did succeed in intercepting Apollo before Hermes ran across him, the god would suspect Hermes' involvement. There was no telling how long Daphne and Melancton had to remain hidden away to stay safe. With one last lingering glance in Daphne's direction to ensure she was okay, he switched off the light and closed the door. Vander stood in the hallway, concern etched across his features.

"She's unconscious," Hermes said.

Vander nodded and gestured across the hall and one door down.

"Ooooh." He couldn't resist smartassedness sometimes. Though, truthfully, he didn't make legitimate attempts to curb the impulse. "An invitation to the Satyr Prince's bedroom, and I didn't even have to buy you dinner first."

With a snort, Vander strode toward his room, no longer caring if Hermes followed him or not.
